However, the .223 REM is centerfire, which does give it more reliability, though at a higher cost. The 223 REM is high velocity and is accurate supersonically up to 500 yards! This is great for hunting small game. You can even hunt deer if your bullet weight is high enough and you are good enough or lucky enough. .223 is known for its accuracy, and this has a lot to do with its similarity to 5.56 NATO (a very similar round with basically the same dimensions but manages to get a bit more velocity and power out of the cartridge).
The .223 is a great round, not because it does everything the best, but because it does everything well. It is a great round for plinking, hunting, self-defense, and even match shooting.
