In the past we’ve talked about how our favorite firearm the AR-15 compares to other firearms. Perhaps predictably the AR-15 came out on top. But as we all know the right tool for the right job simply can’t be beat. There are simply some things in which the shotgun excels.
It is of course better at short ranges. A slug against a large charging animal could very well cause it to change course, no guarantees though. Could you say the same about a rifle? You could, but it would depend on the rifle. Something with a relatively large caliber might be even better than a shotgun as you not only have a large slug but more speed and therefore energy behind it, doing more damage.
You can use birdshot or buckshot with shotguns, essentially shooting multiple projectiles per shot. This can be good once again at short distances, less than 50 yards. The amount of damage the multiple projectiles cause make it easier to hit something. As for damage, the closer the target the more damage you’ll get, and with a shotgun that can mean making something literally disappear.
