There are many reasons why Bass is the most popular type of freshwater fishing in the U.S. First of all it can be found in a lot of places; every state in the union has Bass fishing including Hawaii. This is due in part to Bass being able to thrive in many different environments. They will bite a large range of lures both live and artificial. They are aggressive feeders so you don’t have to wait around as long for a bite. They are aggressive in another sense that once on the line they are hard-fighting and will make you work to reel it in.
Though they can thrive in many different environments they do have their favorites. From freshwater to saltwater to a mix (brackish) it’s no wonder these fish are found in so many places. Focusing on freshwater Bass, Largemouth tend to like lakes and slow moving streams with soft bottoms. Smallmouth Bass like large clear-water lakes and cool and clear streams with moderate current. Rockmouth Bass like clear water that is cool to warm with rocky bottoms. Vegetation and large rocks that can provide cover will also contribute to a Bass friendly environment.
To catch a Bass it helps to have a lure either live or artificial. Live lures include worms, shiners, shad, minnows and crawfish. Plastic worms, jigs, crankbaits, spinnerbaits and swimbaits are artificial lures that work well. Bass do not have the best eyesight so a detailed bait is not necessary. Angling technique goes a long way to getting that Bass to bite and it is important not to rush it. When moving your bait slow is better than fast as much of the prey Bass are used to eating tend to move relatively slow.
Bass fishing can be a lot of fun no matter which type you are fishing. Kicking back next to a peaceful river or lake, enough to be relaxing, but with the knowledge that you may soon have that fish on the line. There are a lot of strategies involved as well like which bait you should use and the best location for using them. With all the great things Bass fishing has going for it, it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular American sport.
